California wildlife officials plan to refer a case involving a resident accused of feeding a coyote in Atwater Village to the Los Angeles city attorney’s office. The animal was confirmed to have bitten a 16-month-old child in the neighborhood.
Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Cort Klopping said officials had contacted the resident and would submit a case concerning illegal feeding of wildlife. The resident’s identity was not available while the case remained open, and any criminal charge is still uncertain.
State officials euthanized the coyote and confirmed it was the animal involved in the attack on Glenhurst Avenue. Residents said it had been approaching homes and causing concern since January, when they say a neighbor began feeding it.
Los Angeles Animal Services said an officer visited the property in May. The resident denied feeding the coyote, and the officer found no evidence to support a violation at that time.
