President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he wants to turn his private golf course in West Palm Beach into a retreat for future presidents.
He described a place where successors could spend quiet weekends playing golf and said the property already has many security features needed to host presidents and world leaders. Trump claimed the United States Secret Service suggested the idea. A plan has been submitted to local officials.
The course is near Trump's Mar-a-Lago home. Trump cited its proximity to an airport and its distance from homes and tall buildings as advantages. He did not mention the 2024 attempt on his life at the club, where a Secret Service agent spotted an armed man near the perimeter fence. The man was later convicted of trying to kill Trump and sentenced to life in prison.
Presidents have used Camp David in Maryland for weekends and meetings. Trump has spent less time there, often choosing his own properties instead.
