A wildfire on Derbyshire’s Tintwistle Moor has been declared a major incident nearly three weeks after it began. Firefighters are still working at the site, where about 260 hectares of moorland and woodland are affected.
Crews first responded above Woodhead Road in Glossop shortly after 22:00 BST on 24 June. They left on 2 July as damping down continued, then returned following reports of flare-ups in areas already burnt.
Deputy chief fire officer Clive Stanbrook said high winds and extreme heat had allowed the fire to spread. He said the declaration reflected the scale of the response, which has involved the fire service and partners including mountain rescue. The cause is not yet known.
It remains unclear how long the wildfire might burn. People have been urged to avoid the area, while nearby residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed.
