Oxfam aid workers warn that the humanitarian crisis in Yemen’s besieged city of Taiz is becoming unmanageable as water, fuel and fresh food run low.
Iran-allied Houthi forces have largely surrounded the city, which has more than 900,000 people, cutting off most supply routes. Fighting near its old airport this week has caused extensive damage in a densely populated residential area. The World Food Programme said wheat flour reserves in Taiz were nearly exhausted by mid-October.
The UN has called for aid workers to be allowed into the city. Oxfam has urged the UK to increase humanitarian aid to Yemen; the UK has allocated £104m a year for each of the next three years, down from £196m in 2020. Donors have committed only 23% of the funding needed for this year’s UN relief programme for Yemen.
