Oxfam aid workers warn that shortages of water, fuel and fresh food could make the humanitarian crisis in Taiz, Yemen, unmanageable.
The city, home to more than 900,000 people, is almost surrounded by Iran-allied Houthi forces, with most routes for supplies cut off. Heavy fighting near its old airport this week has badly damaged a densely populated residential area. The World Food Programme said wheat flour stocks in Taiz were nearly depleted by mid-October.
The UN has called for aid workers to be allowed into the city. Oxfam has urged the UK to increase humanitarian assistance to Yemen, while donors have committed just 23% of the funding needed for this year’s UN relief programme there.
