Israeli police said they detained 10 people in a rare operation against settlers in the occupied West Bank, following separate attacks on a US photojournalist and a group of European diplomats and Palestinians.

Photojournalist Heidi Levine was covering the olive harvest in a Palestinian village on Friday when masked Israeli men knocked her down, kicked and beat her. She suffered four broken vertebrae, a broken rib, a finger injury requiring surgery and cuts across her body.

The next day, Israeli militants armed with sticks and iron bars attacked diplomats and Palestinians harvesting olives near Taybeh. A visiting French mayor was assaulted, an official car window was smashed and a young Palestinian man was severely injured.

Police said on Monday that the detentions were connected to attacks on foreigners and the construction of an illegal outpost. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned accounts of the violence, drawing criticism from US and European officials.
