Masked Israeli settlers are accused of attacking a convoy of European diplomats in Taybeh, in the occupied West Bank. The delegation, from Belgium, France, Poland and the Catholic Church, had travelled to the village near Ramallah to assess reports of repeated settler attacks on Palestinians bringing in their olive harvest.
Belgian authorities said a consulate car window was smashed and a French mayor was assaulted. Reports suggested stones were thrown. Belgium and France condemned the incident and called for those responsible to face justice.
The Israel Defense Forces condemned the violence and said they were investigating. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office questioned the account, suggesting it was part of a campaign to smear Israel.
A separate settler assault in another West Bank village the previous day injured several Palestinians and photographer Heidi Levine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee condemned that attack.
