Republican attorney general challenger Saritha Komatireddy criticized Letitia James’s approach to transit crime on Sunday after a fatal shooting at a Midtown subway station.
Speaking at the Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street station, Komatireddy accused James of focusing on investigations of police rather than violent offenders. She claimed felony assaults in the transit system had risen 94% under James and said families, New Yorkers and tourists felt unsafe using the subway.
Police said the victim had argued with the gunman before the shooting around 12:20 p.m. Saturday. The gunman fled, leaving the man fatally wounded on a northbound platform. Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, cited the shooting in her criticism of James; her claims about the attorney general’s approach remain political allegations.
