Argentina’s president is putting economic pressure on the Falkland Islands’ oil industry and has suggested that fisheries could be next. The president faces a slump in the polls.
Fisheries are a key industry for the islands, which have about 3,600 residents. At a question-and-answer session in Stanley, six of the eight members of the islands’ legislative assembly were present. The session was broadcast by radio across an archipelago with about a dozen inhabited islands.
The pressure comes 44 years after islanders learned by radio that their territory had been invaded. Pressure on fisheries remains a possibility; the available details do not describe a specific measure.
