Four people died and an estimated 500,000 lost power as Hurricane Isaias struck parts of the southern United States with strong winds and heavy rain. Officials reported two deaths each in Florida and Alabama.

Isaias reached Florida late Friday with sustained winds of up to 105 mph (168 km/h), then weakened to a post-tropical cyclone. It toppled trees and tore roofs from buildings. Alabama, Florida and Georgia had declared states of emergency, and Florida and Alabama ordered thousands of people to evacuate.

In Florida's Escambia County, Sheriff Chip Simmons said a woman died when a tree fell on her home. He also reported that a man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after using a generator in a poorly ventilated garage; four others in the house were taken to hospital. The power outage estimate, from tracker PowerOutage, was current as of Saturday evening.
