The Chicago White Sox struck out 21 times in a season-ending Game 5 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, setting an MLB postseason record for a nine-inning game.
Chicago broke the mark it had set three days earlier, when it struck out 19 times in Game 3. Strikeouts accounted for 78% of the White Sox’s outs in Game 5.
Munetaka Murakami and Andrew Benintendi, Chicago’s fourth and fifth hitters, each went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Four other White Sox hitters struck out more than once.
The White Sox finished the best-of-five series with 75 strikeouts, surpassing the previous record of 64 for that format. The overall postseason single-game record remains 23 strikeouts, set by Baltimore against Cleveland in a 12-inning game in 1996.
