President Donald Trump defended his decision to temporarily ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports after lawmakers from both parties objected. The six-month measure would allow Russia to supply some diesel to U.S. and global markets.

In a Monday post, Trump said the plan he coordinated with Russian President Vladimir Putin would help lower diesel prices. He also accused the media of overlooking past European Union purchases of Russian energy. The European Commission has begun a plan to phase out Russian energy imports.

Seven senators, including four Republicans, said the United States should not give Putin a financial lifeline during the war in Ukraine. Other Republicans have urged Trump to keep the ban on Russian energy imports until the war ends. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said easing sanctions on Moscow benefits Russia.

Some analysts doubt the change will significantly lower diesel prices.
