Protests over an electoral roll revision have continued daily in India, with demonstrators demanding that the changes be scrapped and chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar removed. The revision has taken 130 million people off the register.
In Delhi, authorities imposed sweeping restrictions ahead of a Saturday protest led by the Cockroach Janta party. They cancelled 245 trains into the capital, closed 45 metro stations and liquor shops, cut internet service in the city centre and placed activists under house arrest. Barricades, road closures and paramilitary patrols were also reported over the weekend.
The party’s founders were removed from a flight after it landed at Delhi airport. Opposition leaders spent more than eight hours in police stations, while footage showed students and activists being beaten and dragged from the streets; journalists were also detained. In Mumbai, police took Tushar Gandhi into custody to prevent him joining a demonstration.
On Monday, Delhi police withdrew Jantar Mantar’s designation as a protest site and proposed three other locations.
