President Donald Trump says he plans to close Washington’s historic East Potomac Golf Course for 15 months starting Nov. 15, even as his proposed overhaul faces a court challenge.
Trump announced the plan Sunday on social media and posted a rendering of the redesigned public course near the White House. He said it would remain open to the public after the work and could host major golf tournaments.
A judge last week halted the redevelopment plans until at least Oct. 26 after large-scale tree removal began with little notice to the court or the plaintiffs. Following Trump’s post, the judge asked the government whether its position had changed. The government said the National Park Service had not finished its review and the plan was not final.
Democracy Forward, which represents the plaintiffs, says the course is part of a national park and recreation facility meant for public use.
