Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly considering a trip to the United States for the World Cup final if England beat Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final. The reported plan would take the outgoing prime minister to Sunday’s match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey before a return to London for his final morning in office.
Arrangements are still being worked out. A No 10 official said the trip would not delay the transfer of power, despite a tight schedule that could see Starmer arrive in London at about 7.30am. He is then expected to speak at Downing Street and offer his resignation to the King at Buckingham Palace.
Andy Burnham is due to take over that afternoon. He gained 27 more nominations from Labour MPs on Monday, bringing his total to 349. The government is also considering a bank holiday on Friday 24 July, but only if England reach the final and win it.
