Anthony Barry will sit alongside Thomas Tuchel as England face Argentina on Wednesday in a bid to reach their first men's World Cup final since 1966. Eleven years ago, Barry was nearing the end of his playing career at Accrington Stanley and beginning to coach the club's Under-16s.

The 40-year-old former midfielder spent much of his playing career in the lower leagues. He was part of the Accrington team that won the Conference 20 years ago, securing the club's return to the Football League after 44 years.

After retiring, Barry became assistant manager at Wigan Athletic, then joined Chelsea's first-team coaching staff in 2020. Tuchel kept him on when he took charge in 2021; they later reunited at Bayern Munich. Barry has also coached with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Portugal national teams.
