Crews are scheduled to bring down a vacant 18-story office tower in Chamblee by controlled implosion at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, city officials said. The former Georgia Department of Revenue headquarters stands at 1800 Century Boulevard.
Roads around Century Boulevard will close at 6:45 a.m. and remain closed until the area is cleared for safety. The city will enforce a 750-foot perimeter beginning an hour before the blast. Officials advised nearby property owners to stay indoors during the restricted period or leave the perimeter before 6:45 a.m.; re-entry will be barred until restrictions end.
The building became vacant in early 2025 after the revenue department moved to a facility at 2595 Century Parkway NE. A proposal to convert the tower into 289 apartments was considered, but property owner Highwoods Properties said the project was no longer active. Developers have not announced long-term plans for the 2.2-acre site.
