The westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge reopened early Wednesday after a fatal shooting shut its lanes for several hours. New York City Emergency Management said drivers should still expect delays.
Port Authority police said they received a report of a single-vehicle crash near the middle of the bridge shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Responding officers found the driver with a gunshot wound to the head. The NYPD said the man was taken to Englewood Medical Center in critical condition and later died.
The closure backed up traffic across the Bronx toward the Major Deegan Expressway. Commercial vehicles are permitted only on the bridge’s upper level, leaving them affected by the westbound shutdown. Police said the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known, and no arrests had been made.
