El Dorado Furniture will pay $1.3 million to job applicants after a federal investigation into whether its hiring favored Hispanic candidates.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said it found reasonable cause to believe the Miami furniture company favored Hispanic applicants across its positions, leaving Black, white and other non-Hispanic applicants unhired between November 2022 and February 2026. The agency said the alleged practice would violate federal protections against discrimination based on race and national origin.

The payment is part of a settlement reached before the EEOC filed a lawsuit. The number of affected applicants has not been made public. The agency said El Dorado also agreed to update hiring policies, retain anti-discrimination rules and provide annual discrimination training to employees involved in recruiting or hiring.

El Dorado executive Jesús R. Capó said the company cooperated with the investigation and began reviewing and strengthening its hiring practices while it was underway. Eight of its 19 Florida stores are in Miami-Dade County.
